Our Work

1. Community and participatory theatre

Jukwaa Arts uses theatre to provoke emotions and trigger discussions on touchy issues within our community. The shows are staged in community spaces.

We have done a couple projects on this. They include:

(a). Give Me a Voice, Respect My Gender

A campaign aimed at creating safe spaces for women at the workplace using theatre.

The goal of the project was to create a safer workspace for women working at Hantex Garment Export Processing Zones Company by performing participatory plays that trigger discussion on sexual harassment to derive solutions to the vice.

Through the medium of theatre, we want to create an offline space for dialogue and exchange about this highly contentious health issue.

The project involved 2 Theatre Directors, 1 stage manager, 7 actors and 2 poets.

2. Radio Drama

(a) Tabasamu

This is a Swahili audio drama that airs on Radio Kaya, a local radio station.

The drama is set in a fictional Dimanga community. This 12 episode drama highlights the lives of the Dimanga community, their challenges following the pandemic and how they are adapting and coping with the new normal.

The audio drama is created and produced by Jukwaa Arts Productions, with funds from the KEMRI|Wellcome Trust Research Programme-Kilifi.

(b) Pili

A 12 episode radio drama series on fostering peaceful communities in post-election times.

The Swahili radio drama series was produced as a commissioned project by Search For Common Ground in 2023.

The drama aired in various radio stations at the Kenyan coast and in Garissa.

(c) My Dad is a Liar

A 4-part podcast episode created from a compilation of stories told by children of lies their parents and guardians told during the Covid 19 pandemic.

This project was done with funds from Africalia and Belgium.




3. Children's Theatre

Lessons From The Wild

Lessons From the Wild’’ is a play for children aged 4-10 years that aims to communicate and instill values in children in an entertaining way.

The play uses animal characters to teach children key lessons and instil values in them when they are still young to ensure we raise a generation that is morally upright and aware.

The play covers topics like Social inclusivity to shun discrimination of all forms amongst children, living harmoniously as brothers and sisters, Caring for the environment and obedience and respect to all persons.

4.Theatre for Workplace Communication

We have partnered with various corporate organizations in Mombasa and environs to use theatre to communicate key topics to their internal and external clients.

Some of the key topics we have presented theatre on include: Change management, Service Delivery, Organization culture, Wellness, Climate change, Occupational health and safety and Road Safety.

We partnered with KenGen in 2019 to create and stage the show ‘Who Killed Change’, a play on change management in organizations. Trailer video.


5. Theatre for entertainment

These shows include : Salt In The Honey, Drowning Fish, Wet Water, Golden Blooms, Poetry Fest, Amongst Others …
